Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to order john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level names remained active.
